What is Practica?

Sunday Salsa Practica is a focused practise session with other Salsa 2.0 students, where we get 60 mins of maximum repetitions!

Who is Practica for?

It's targeted towards Salsa 2.0 students for the current term!

What do we do at Practica?

We focus strictly on getting maximum repetitions of the past week's Salsa 2.0 content...and nothing else! It's the best way to ensure enough reps.

How many people come to Practica?

Usually 30-50 people. So there's plenty of variety in practise partners.

How is this different from usual classes?

In class we LEARN. In Practica we get reps!

It's like going to a Personal Trainer. They show you what exercises to do and how to do it: that's the equivalent of class. But then you still need to go do the reps and the sets! That's the equivalent to the Practica session.

What if spots are sold out?

Make sure you add yourself to the wait list so that you'll be notified as soon as a spot opens up.

We try our best to keep the leads vs follows ratio as close as possible.

You might have heard Jai preach about this in class -

... Going to classes is NOT practice.

... Social Dancing at parties is NOT practise.

... PRACTISE is practise!

The absolute best way to practise is to get together with a training partner, and agree to focus on NOTHING ELSE but continuous repetitions of the specific thing that you came to practise.

... No getting distracted with trying something new or different.

... No pressure to invent new things.

... No temptation to stop when you feel bored.

Just a pure commitment to getting repetitions of a specific thing over and over until you have done it enough times for it to become muscle memory.

Sunday Salsa Practica will be based on the Salsa 2.0 class. We'll be practising strictly what we learned in class that previous week (and the weeks prior).

We'll cover things like:

✅ Footwork

✅ Each core movement

✅ Full sequence for that term to date

✅ Styling movements

✅ Maximum repetitions to music of varying speed

We will NOT be doing things like:

❌ Learning new moves

❌ Practising things from previous terms

❌ Practising unrelated things

❌ Covering a lot of theory and listening to concepts being taught

Treat it like a "workout", not like a lesson/class.

In the gym, your Personal Trainer shows you what exercises to do and how to do them -- that's the equivalent of the weekly classes. But you still have to do the reps! -- that's Practica. Then after you've done the hard work you can show off your beach body -- that's the equivalent of going social dancing.

EXAMPLE SESSION PLAN:

0-15 mins: Nonstop reps of the footwork (unpartnered)

15-25 mins: Walking through the routine to counts, nonstop (partnered)

25-45 mins: Running the reps to slow music, nonstop (partnered)

45-60 mins: Running the reps to med-fast music, nonstop (partnered)

We will do our best to keep the ratio equal to maximise practise time with a partner, but please bear in mind that it's impossible to guarantee exact ratio.

The fee helps us cover the studio hire and the instructor/assistant facilitating the guided session.
