WHAT IS SAMBA?

WHAT IS SAMBA?

Samba is a rich, syncopated rhythm (2/4 beat) with its origins in the 19th century in the traditions of African slaves who brought their Batuques (drums) to Brazil, where the two cultures merged. It is considered one of the most valued cultural expressions to Brazil and has become part of the Brazilian identity.

Today, when people think of Samba, the first thing they think of is the famous carnival in Rio de Janeiro. During the carnival, Samba schools perform with thousands of elaborately dressed dancers and show their interpretation of this year's theme.
